My grandmother told the story over and over again about the horrible storms overnight that led to the 1925 flood of the Maquoketa River in Manchester. She was just a young child and the storms that brought all of the rain to the area really scared her. She remembered going downtown with her father to see the flooding the next day. This photo was taken at the base of the W. Main St. Bridge, looking east (you can see the courthouse in the far distance). A truly catastrophic event for the community! Longtime Manchester residents may remember some of these businesses and buildings. It seems that with every big flood event over the years, the city lost more and more of these buildings. The area today is almost hard to recognize compared to back then.
